Atkure Defar (MPH, MBA, Ph.D) is a public health epidemiologist who worked over the last two decades in research, academia and health system. He holds his PhD in Epidemiology and Public health from the University of Gondar (UoG) and co-supervised by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), He assessed the impact of geography on sick child health care service utilisation in the four populous regions of Ethiopia. He also received his MPH with emphasis in Epidemiology from Addis Ababa University and also Masters of Business Administration from Jimma University.  

Atkure's research focus on the development and evaluation of public health interventions for Maternal, new-born, child health services, including assessment of the equity, quality as well as effectiveness of health programs. He has particular interest in evaluation of community-based interventions, in programme design, and in embedding capacity developments in health research. He has advanced skills in managing big data. Currently, he is chairing the Institution Review Board of the EPHI and a Research Fellow at the LSHTM on a project that is being implement by LSHTM in collaboration with the EPHI on the Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation Program, which is a cluster randomised control trial (cRCT) being conducted in five regions of the country.
